Granite Countertops – 4 Reasons Why They’re Such a Popular Choice

When it comes to kitchen makeovers, you can’t turn on HGTV, the DIY network or any home improvement show without hearing about granite countertops. Potential buyers are always so disappointed if the kitchen in the house they’re touring doesn’t have granite. So why is granite one of the most popular choices for countertops?

Natural Beauty

Each slab of granite is unique and has its own beauty and appeal. Granite can be found in a wide range of color variations from warm earth tones and vibrant shades of red, blue, green or yellow to the calmer hues of white, black and gray. Some slabs include dramatic veining that catches the eye and commands attention, while other have veining that is more subdued and subtle.

Many man-made materials such as quartz are designed to mimic the look of granite. However, these imitations fail to duplicate granite’s intricate natural veining. They also tend to repeat a uniform pattern and when used over a large area, the pattern will become apparent. Some of the white shades of granite can emulate the look of marble and are often chosen instead of marble because of its durability.

Excellent Durability

While many chose granite countertops for their beauty, others are attracted to their durability. Granite is a very hard natural stone, measuring between 6 and 7 on the Mohs scale. It will stand up very well to the wear and tear your kitchen faces every day. Granite is highly resistant to scratches so there’s no reason to worry about damage from cutting or chopping. A cutting board should still be used though, as the granite could end up dulling your cutlery.

Granite is also very heat resistant, making it the perfect choice for countertops near an oven or cooktop. If you should have to quickly set down a hot pan, the granite can take the heat. When leaving a hot pot on a granite countertop for an extended period of time, a hot pad or trivet is still recommended. When properly sealed, granite can be very resistant to spills and stains as well. It should be sealed a couple of times a year to prevent stains and make for simple everyday maintenance

One of a Kind Design

Since so many homeowners choose granite countertops, it stands to reason that there are a lot of look-alike kitchens across the country, right? Wrong. As with any natural stone, no two pieces are the same. Because of the wide range of colors and the naturally intricate veining patterns, each slab possesses its own unique charm.

No matter what style your kitchen is, there is a slab of granite that will complement it perfectly and provide you with the one-of-a-kind-look you were hoping for. You have so many more choices with granite countertops as opposed to those made from man-made materials. You will be able to choose from various granite slabs rather than a small sample of man-made material, allowing you to see what your entire countertop will look like before it’s fabricated and installed.

A Solid Investment

Sometimes people think natural stone countertops will break the budget for their kitchen project and opt for man-made materials such as quartz or engineered stone products. Granite is competitively priced with quartz and, in some cases, can even be more reasonable. When properly sealed and installed, granite countertops are a great long-term investment that increases the value of your home.
