Granite Versus Marble

Granite and marble are natural stones each slab is unique in color and pattern, pits and fissures are likely to be present in both. Within a single slab, there could be variation in color and pattern from one end to the other. These slight irregularities are what make each project unique from the other. Marble is typically used for bathroom vanities, desktops and fireplaces. It is not usually recommended for kitchen countertops, since it is more porous and less dense than granite, it can scratch and stain more easily. Granite on the other hand, is much harder and it is not typically affected by typical kitchen usage.

Quartzite

Quartzite is a natural stone that starts out as sandstone and evolves over time under intense heat and pressure. When heated, individual quartz pieces recrystallize giving it a beautiful and decorative sparkling pattern. It is gradually becoming a popular choice for countertops because it has a similar look to marble, but requires much less maintenance since it is much harder. Like any other natural stone, quartzite countertops should be sealed to help protect the surface from etching and stains. It is available in wide range natural, earth-toned hues, white, grey and beige tones. Other color options such as blue, green, pink or red can also be found. The color variation depends on several factors such as the amount of iron oxide present, the region where the stone was mined and the age of the stone. Some popular quartzite colors include: Taj Mahal, Super White, Fantasy Brown, White Macaubas, and Azul Macaubas.

Leather Versus Honed

Leather also called brushed finish, is a newer style of surface finish that has become widely popular among consumers. It is commonly seen on darker stones, giving it a textured appearance while retaining the natural color. A leathered surface usually has a soft sheen to it, but is much less shiny than the glossy look of a polished slab. Leathered finish may help to hide fingerprints, water spots and smudges more easily than polished or honed stones.

Honed finish on the other hand, is a satin smooth finish with little or no shine. These surfaces are always smooth with no ridges or bumps. The downside of this finish it that it generally makes the stone look lighter and sort of “greyed out”, especially if applied to darker surfaces. Honed surfaces need to be resealed more often than polished ones and are more susceptible to stain.

Either fill out the estimate form found in our website or visit our showroom with a layout of your project and approximate dimensions so that we may provide you with an estimate.

Once you have selected a stone, our representatives will assist you in selecting the right edge, sinks and backsplash (if applicable). Although we do not sell faucets, if you are considering purchasing a new one please have it on hand at the time of the template.

Note: when visiting our showroom you may bring samples of your cabinet color, wall coverings, paint colors, tile, or other interior design elements that will help you select the best stone for your project. At our shop, you can choose from one of the area’s largest selections of natural stone in full slabs and a wide variety of quartz manufactures. We also have a large remnant selection for smaller projects.

Once all decisions are finalized we require a signed quote and 60% deposit based on initial measurements in order to start the template process. The balance may be adjusted after the template is completed, depending on exact measurements.Once you cabinets are installed, we will send an expert to make digital templates. At this time all of your project details will be finalized, including seam locations, corners, overhangs, radiuses, and support requirements. Although seams are used only when necessary, material size, veining and/or site conditions may affect seam placement and will be determined by one of our professionals. After the templates are completed, you may schedule an appointment to come to our shop and determine the layout, to decide the areas that you wish to include or avoid.

At Innovative Stone we use a diamond-encrusted blade to cut the material per our template. We then use a router to create the desired edge, followed by a series of diamond-encrusted sanding pads to achieve the same high polish on the edge as the face of the slab.

This is the most exciting part of the process! Please make sure that you or a designated decision maker (18 years old or older) is present at all times. Please clear your countertops prior to our arrival. Although our installers will have the tools necessary to keep the dust at a minimum, there will be some residual dust, so please cover your furniture. Since we are not licensed electricians or plumbers, we cannot disconnect or install electrical appliances or plumbing equipment. You must make other arrangements with a certified professional if necessary. We will fasten the sink into the countertop and attach a dishwasher bracket to the bottom of the stone at the time of installation. All fixtures, such as faucets, dispenser, filters & air switches will be drilled at the time of installation. A service fee may apply for additional holes requested after installation day.
